What is MSE

MSE (multiple stabilized enzymes) is a certified all natural microbial and enzyme innoculant for ruminant feeds. Three yeasts, three bacteria, and two fungi are incorporated with enzyme substrate to provide a product which enhances the ruminal digestion of fiber and protein. Although this product has been available for some 20 years, feeding research was not done until last year.

The product is available in several dry and liquid forms and can be used as a supplement additive or applied directly to the rations at the feedlot.

Burt Wykenthal, of University of Nebraska, used MSE as a test against the Rumensin/Tylan combination in corn rations at the university of Nebraska panhandle research station. The results can be seen by clicking the study name above. Test results showed a 9% decrease in feed:gain ratios using MSE as a stand alone against Rumensin/Tylan rations. Also ADG was improved by .32 pounds per day, carcass yield was increase by 1% and rib eye area was increased by .3 inches. All were significant to the degree that there was a less than 5% probability of error.

I coordinated a feeding study at the University of Idaho's Caldwell experiment station with Dr. Dan Hinman using barley diets. We saw results similar to the Nebraska study. The trial showed no significant differences between the use of MSE as a stand alone and Rumensin/Tylan combinations; however the statistical model was not set up to give the proper degrees of freedom to measure the same differences observed in the University of Nebraska trial. Both MSE and the Rumensin/Tylan rations performed significantly better than the control rations. An increase in the number of replications from four to six or seven would probably enhance the statistical model in favor of differences with MSE. I was particularly impressed with the carcass data. We now present the data from the second trials. One at the University of Nebraska, exactly the same as their previous trial except that we used high moisture corn. The second trial, at the University of Idaho, is completed. Barley diets in seven replications of five steers in two rations containing high protein - low fiber and low protein - high fiber and comparing MSE to Rumensin / Tylan. The contention of the producer of MSE (Natur's Way, Horton, Kansas) is that MSE will perform as well in the presence of low protein high fiber diets. We are trying to verify this claim. New studies are now being set up:

The first at the University of Idaho and the Washington State University conducted by Dr. Bill Sanchez will be a dairy study comparing MSE against a control in a 20 cow flip-flop Latin square design to measure milk production, milk quality and dry matter usage.

The second will be conducted by Dr. Ray Ansotegui at Montana State University using 18 ruminally fistulated cows in a flip-flop Latin square design to study the effects of MSE on the digestion of fiber, protein, cell attachment, and rumen flow using coarse low quality hay.
